Hello!
I remember back in 2019 when I was decluttering my kitchen cabinets and found quite a few coffee mugs. As I looked at them, it occurred to me that I could upcycle them into treat holders to donate to the University of Calgary Students’ Union Food Bank, which I believe had recently been featured in the news. I nicknamed those mugs full of treats “Mug Hugs.”
My mom and I stuffed those first “Mug Hugs” with items you could drink or eat from a mug, wrapped them in cello bags and dropped them off at the U of C SU Foodbank.
“Mug Hug” content suggestions:
- singles of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, crystal light, apple cider
- cup of soup
- oatmeal
- granola bars, rice krispie squares, cookies
- candy
- microwave popcorn
- cake in a mug mixes
(new to 2024 — we made a book mark tag for the Mug Hugs. Grab it here.)
In that year, I asked my upline, Rose Coleman, if we could organize a philanthropy project at the Christmas party. At that time, I had chosen not to participate in the gift exchange game because I was focused on decluttering our house. Frankly, I felt that there were others in greater need than myself who could benefit from a gift.
We asked everyone to bring us coffee mugs they no longer wanted and purchase one type of item for all the mugs.
2019 – 44 Mug Hugs
the year Renée had tulle leftover from one of her sewing projects that we wrapped those first Mug Hugs in
I treaure this memory of Twila and I. I was absent-mindly singing along to Christmas carols and sang “Holly Jolly Christmas” in a deep voice. She laughed and we laughed and lughed until the tears ran down our faces. She would always think of me whenever she heard that song.
2020 – no Mug Hugs because…. well, we all know that year.
2021 – 64 Mug Hugs
the year we all wore masks
2022 – 41 Mug Hugs & 18 Treat Bags
the year we assembled at my house
and I had Neal come with me to drop them off.
2023 – 108 Mug Hugs
the year we had to postpone until January 2024 but I am still counting as 2023
Please let me know when you Mug Hugs and spread the love.
